Ramblin Red

V-factor 0

My breeding program started with Ramblin Red, V-Factor 0. For a more detailed story of my relationship with Red go to my article page & read 'Reflections of Ramblin Red'. This is an article that was published in the December issue of Horse & Horseman in 1988. Ramblin Red was such an outstanding individual in every aspect that his blood most definitely should be continued down thru the years for horsemen thru the ages to enjoy.

During the early years of the MFTHBA the association had a historian named Trellis Dehirst of Ava, MO. From 1960 thru 1970 she wrote articles on the Missouri Fox Trotters that were published in The Valley Horse News in Chesterfield Missouri. In February 1966 she wrote: " . . . . . I would like to tell you something about an outstanding Missouri Fox Trotting stud, Ramblin Red. Ramblin Red is a coming four-year-old, deep red sorrel with a blaze & two white stockings. This isn't unusual to see a Missouri Fox Trotter with this coloring & marking but Ramblin Red's mane & tail are the most unusual & beautiful that I have ever seen on a horse. You will see red, white & black all in his mane & tail & since his mane & tail are very long & heavy, this makes him a very beautiful & outstanding horse. And believe me, his fox trot is just as near perfect as his looks . . . . . ."

This is the Ramblin Red that is the foundation of my breeding program. I hope you have been studying the pedigrees & are getting a feel for the great old foundation stock of this breed. Ramblin Red was not a great horse by happen stance. He comes from a line of great & distinguished horses all the way back thru his ancestry. His V-Factor was 0!

We will go right on past the great old fox trot founders Kissee Fox & Old Ted & continue our discussion focused on the great old American Saddlebreds; Cadmus Dare, son of Chester's Last, son of Chester Dare, son of the immortal Black Squirrel. Ramblin Red, born in 1962, is 8th generation from Black Squirrel both top & bottom sides. (Cotham Dare, born in 1942, was 5th generation from Black Squirrel.) Red was only 23 generations from the Byerley Turk that was imported to England from Turkey in 1689 as stud for the Royal Mares.  Some of those grand ole Thoroughbred names included in Red's lineage are: Lexington, Boston, Grey Eagle, Messenger, Mambrino, Herod, Eclipse, Timoleum, Diomed, & Sir Peter Teazle to mention only a few.  These great names appear many times throughout his ancestry.

My research, guided by Mr. Barnes, also places the famed American Saddlebred, Stonewall Highland, as the stud owned by Mr. Edd Hamilton in the correct time period that also fits the description of the Earl Silvey Saddle Mare (Lou Ann)'s sire. If that is the true case, Red once again has a full line up of the royalty of the old American Saddlebreds behind him.  Ethan Allen & Black Hawk are some of the grand ole Morgan names that have only just fallen off Red's papers.

Ramblin Red was the 1969 Kentucky Grand Champion.   I could fill a book with the listings of accomplishments of each horse in Ramblin Red's lineage. He is only 3rd generation from Thoroughbreds (not just any Thoroughbreds but the best of the best for generations) & Morgans; Wonderful horses passing on wonderful horses down thru the ages.
